The Shul is our refuge from the daily grind and whatever steps can be taken to minimize our distractions in Shul must be taken. If one is able and open to it, it's best to leave the cellphone in the coatroom (assuming it's safe there). I'll admit that I don't do this, but I recognize the value as I did try it once and it did bring on a certain sense of freedom and spiritual focus. Putting the phone on the table, even with the laudable intentions you mention, itself creates a distraction of a different sort - to the owner of the phone and to others around him. There are also, unfortunately, those who check their emails in the Shul in full view of others and this detracts from the entire atmosphere. Even those who have the Siddur on their phones would be well advised to take a Siddur off the shelf anyway; if not for themselves, then for those around them who are disturbed by the site of someone looking at a phone during Davening. It seems that these are crucial universal points that Rabbonim make that we'd be foolish to ignore. Please don't let the message get lost in the slight misplacement of their constructive criticism. The Rabbonim are doing their best to help us focus on the values we all deeply cherish.

Re: Rethinking My Social Connections

Thanks for posting.

Re: Internet Shiur Part 6

A parent told me that Bruriah insists its students use the internet for homework.

Re: Internet Shiur Part 6

Does anyone know of any yeshiva that has incorporated into its curriculum an approach to dealing with the Internet that is more than just banning and saying it is "Assur"?

We desperately need such an educational approach, but I have not heard of anyone developing it. Why isn't this THE priority of Torah U Mesorah and our Torah leaders?

Filters are important for devices and computers. However, without filters being "installed" in our heads so that our world outlook protects us from the dangers out there, all of the filters in the world will not be enough.

There are two issues: First, you will soon be unable to avoid the internet so we need to learn now how to use it properly. Second, many things involve danger. People die in car crashes in the country during the summer, not to mention the immodesty and infidelity that seems to plague the area (as rabbanim who counsel couples tell me). In a shul near me, we say Tehillim all summer because of the danger. Do we tell people not to go to the country in the summer?

It's a question I dont have an answer too. I think Rabbi Student was going to address it and than decided not to, because it really is a question for their own rabbis to answer.

Re: The Shiur

Thanks for this excellent site. I see it's well researched and you come from the purest of intentions. One question I have from your 1st presentation is do you believe it possible that there are people who lead normal lives without the internet, and when exposed to the internet they become addicted it? If such a person exists, and I for one believe there are many like this, you would seem to refer them to a therapist. Is it right for such a person to embrace the internet, and then discover he has a problem he didn't have before and now have to see a therapist for? Not sure if I'm being clear, but without the internet he/she was normal, but with the internet they've discovered an addiction and now need therapy. Is it possible there's another direction for such a person? Thanks.

Re: Torah Resources

Dr Melech Tanen compiled a nice collection of links to primary sources in this google doc.

A different approach to those suggested here, since no block is perfect, nor filters (nor do either deal with the temptation to just wander aimlessly for hours on end)... I recommend using a "skin" on your browser like this picture of the kotel. It makes it harder to act on those links to have that reminder in your face. Even better is a FireFox persona a friend made me (which I'm hoping he'll make public) with pictures of tzitzis strings in front of the sea and the sky, and the words "velo sasuru acharei levavekhem ve'acharei eineikhem -- and you shall not stray after your hearts and after your eyes" (from Vayiqra and the Shema) in the corner.

Re: Internet Shiur Part 1

Test
